Drawings

So following my progress review i was pushed to explore my current project throught the use of other mediums apart from cardboard and paper so I created this series of drawing depicting each box seperate from the others using black pen. I chose to arrange them in the same way they are layed out in within the 3D model and I really like the outcome, especially the way the black and white contrast with each other.

3-d forms

Choosing 3-d primative forms as my intial theme for the objects within my boxes, i have created this inital piece. i really like the simplicity on the whole especially the way the white stands out from the dark background and emphasises the objects.
of course this is only the beginning and alot more experiementation and use of new materials will take place in the coming weeks.

minimalist art

up until now i guess i was looking in the wrong places to find artist relating to my current work because after some help i have discovered the first american minimalists, the likes of robert morris, donald judd and carl andre who all used simple forms and shapes, particularly the box to illustrate the fact that art was not just painting as it had been prodominantly before.

Now art was reactions to certain stimuli such as the confusion in looking at several stacked boxes and wondering, why?, thus provocing a viewers need to interact with the piece and draw their own conclusions.

This type of art also proved that extensive time and effort, such as that involved in painting was not needed to create 'artwork'.

here is some of their work:

ROBERT MORRIS

' the box with sound of it's own making'

'mirrored cubes'

CARL ANDRE

'minimalism perfection'

DONALD JUDD

'ten units stainless steel'

following on from my box idea i have pushed it a little further by trying to create silhouettes rather than show an object which i find adds to the mystery of the piece. pictures to come soon
while exploring my other idea i kind of branched off a little and decided to look at emotions instead of objects that can alter our view of a space. this is not by far a finished concept and i hope to make clay faces and maybe even mould my own face with all the expressions.

o.k, so after some time and alot of cardboard, i have produced a miniature version of my idea. the arrangement of the piece is still to be decided but i like the idea of an object hierarchy with the most important objects and the top going dowto the least important on the bottom. i have made a version with objects but failed to take any pictures of it :/.

Sound art?

i'm not usually one for sound art but this stuff is amazing aswell as prompting me to investigate the idea of using sound within my coardboard box idea

my wall

this is the wall to my studio space with most of my main work on it, some i haven't posted on here

black vs white

This is just a small piece just to represent some ideas for the large box piece i am focusing on, this demonstrates how the colour of a small can change our perception of it.

black = dark, mysterious, evil, serious
white = brightness, hope, fresh, good

jigsaws!

after cutting out random pieces of cardboard i starred blankly at the remains and thought, 'hey this is similar to a jigsaw puzzle'. so, next week i will make my own jigsaw puzzle after all it is about space and the fitting together of objects within a space

Framing space?

From the reminance of an old cardboard box, i looked and thought, 'hey this is similar to a picture frame', so i took some pictures of it infront of different spaces and these are the early results.

My desk

my bag

one side of the studio

Pa

one window

and the other

this also fits into my running concept of the changing perceptions of space throught the objects within, as the frame remains a constant yet the 'picture' within changes
